Humor is undoubtedly the most conspicuous aspect of John Wood and Paul Harrison’s video work. In many respects it bears a similarity to a number of West Coast artists of the 1960s and 70s, namely William Wegman, John Baldessari and Allen Ruppersberg. Yet for the British duo who have shown at the Tate Modern, MoMA Queens, they also add a dose of the poetic to their videos, photographs and sculptures. I recently presented “One More Kilometer” (2009) at Arco in Madrid, where it was one of the most popular videos in the show. The way the paper drifts and floats reminds me of Cy Twombly’s doodles and abstractions, yet the meticulous formal qualities also reminds me of Fluxus works from the 1960s. –Paul Young
