about

I first saw Thorsten Brinkmann’s work at the annual LOOP video art fair a couple of years ago. He’s based in Berlin and he’s better known for his photographs and sculptures that are generally made from found objects. He often shoots himself in hand-made costumes for example, which are composed of household items. The results are somewhat surreal, with a direct reference to painterly works by Durer and Valazquez, but for me they also have an exciting urgency to them, one that winks at Dada while keeping a healthy distance from assemblage or pop combines. “Se King” has many of those same qualities: suggesting classical painting, portraiture and Dada. In fact, I believe that it should be hung on the wall in the same way—as a still photograph or painting –Paul Young
